The treble is pushed back so it never gets harsh, and the midrange and bass are pushed to the forefront to allow for a very fat, liquid sustaining tone. Split tones are nice, and parallel tones deliver a really neat sound.
That alone will change the tone a bit. The lack of the air gap and the ceramic magnet also make this pickup a bit different than the original. A snarling pickup to you might be a mild pickup to me. Just pick one up and try a quick pickup swap! I'd say they "snarl" just fine. I play mostly metal and hard rock and absolutely loved the Air Norton in my Strat.

Sound: Well, if you are a passive pickup person, this is definitely a single-coil humbucker that you should try. I'm very fond of Ibanez, and it would see that Dimarzios were made for them, BUT, after playing with one in my Hamer, it sounds the same, in a good way.
If you watch a lot of Paul Gilbert videos, you will hear a very distinct tone produced by Dimarzio pickups I can't say that I get that sweet, buttery tone out of it, but, that is probably due to my Boss ME pedal. I'm sure that with some modifications, I could dial in that Petrucci and Rob Marcello tone for leads.
