Marouane Chamakh [A], Ju-Young Park , Ryo , Nicklas Bendtner , — Denilson , — Joel Campbell. Benik Afobe , Chuks Aneke , Daniel Boateng , Hector Bellerin, Thomas Eisfeld, Serge Gnabry [A], Dejan Iliev, Kristoffer Olsson, Philip Roberts , Jon Toral, Watt, now 21, will be classed as a senior player from the start of the next campaign, and the fact that he has been pushed out to the left flank to accommodate a player five years his junior in Chuba Akpom is perhaps the most telling indictment that he is further away than ever in his quest to make the grade at Emirates Stadium.
Akpom, meanwhile, endured perhaps his most difficult evening since his promotion to the U21 side as he struggled to cope against an experienced Norwich backline, which included 28 year old Michael Turner. Akpom was frequently bundled to the ground by players of considerably stronger build and his confidence appeared to take a knock after he squandered a glorious opportunity early on following good work from Watt.
Akpom is still learning and developing, however, and will have an opportunity to put things right against West Ham United on Friday. One pleasing element last night was the performance of Craig Eastmond, which may be something of a bewildering statement in the eyes of some.
Much derided by sections of the support, Eastmond may, like Watt, seem rather far away from the first-team picture at Emirates Stadium, with Mikel Arteta, Francis Coquelin and Emmanuel Frimpong all ahead of him, but the midfielder has evidently improved as a result of his loan spell with Wycombe Wanderers last season, and last night demonstrated his impressive reading of the game, playing several important passes, and also frequently covering the right-back position when Hector Bellerin embarked on one of his many dangerous runs forward.
It may not seem likely that he will add to his ten senior appearances for the Gunners any time soon, but his markedly improved all-round showing should bode well for his future career, even if that is to be elsewhere. Sanchez Watt had earlier scored his fourth goal in three games to put Arsenal in front but neither goalkeeper had many meaningful saves to make in a poor encounter which perhaps gave strength to the argument that there are now too many games at this level, with neither side looking particularly fresh.
Squillaci was the shock inclusion as an over-age player in a side which also saw the return of Damian Martinez in goal. Martinez, as fourth choice goalkeeper at the club, would ordinarily have travelled to Montpellier with the first-team squad as back up for Vito Mannone but the Argentinian, having not yet been registered with Arsenal for two years, is currently ineligible for the Champions League and therefore James Shea travelled to France instead.
Josh Rees returned from injury to make the bench, but, once again, coach Terry Burton was reluctant to make full use of his substitutes. Arsenal really should have taken the lead with the first opportunity of the game following good work from Watt down the left flank. The 21 year old, who worked hard all evening, controlled the ball well before deceiving the on-rushing Norwich stopper Mark Bunn and crossing for Chuba Akpom who was well placed in the centre.
Akpom diverted the ball wide with Bunn stranded when it appeared easier to score and that proved to be one of very few clear cut chances all evening. The dangerous Jacob Murphy then signalled his intent with a dangerous drive into the box, eluding Jernade Meade in the process, before shooting just wide of the far post.
Summer signing Alexander Tettey, who impressed for Norway against England prior to Euro , then hit a tame effort wide, before Arsenal took the lead in a move orchestrated by yet another superb Conor Henderson set-piece.
The Irish youngster whipped a precise corner towards the far post, Craig Eastmond succeeded in diverting the ball back into the area and Watt was on hand to apply the simplest of finishes to open the scoring. The Murphy brothers continued to threaten, albeit intermittently, whilst Akpom wasted another opportunity following yet more tireless harrying from Watt.
In the second period, both sides still struggled to gain a foothold on proceedings, with Henderson sending a swerving effort just over, and centre-back Michael Turner somehow spurning an opportunity from close range before the offside flag saved his blushes. Bunn did well to tip over a well-hit cross from Meade, before Henderson and Olsson both squandered chances.
The tough work begins on Friday. Damian Martinez A spectator for much of the game on his return, he could do little about the goal. Hector Bellerin Made some superb solo runs and is steadily improving defensively.
Sebastien Squillaci Not markedly troubled, there were few signs of rustiness from the experienced Frenchman. Jernade Meade Reiterated the belief he should be deployed further forwards by delivering some superb crosses. Craig Eastmond His tactical awareness has evidently improved and played some incisive passes..
Kris Olsson Guilty of over playing the ball at times, he still impressed with his vision. Sanchez Watt Extremely hard-working, he deserved his goal and created several other chances. Chuba Akpom Struggled to impose himself against the experienced Michael Turner.
He will not travel to France but could be in contention for involvement in the matchday squad in the near future. There was further positive news on the injury front as Abou Diaby, who missed the thrashing of Southampton at the weekend, also took part in the session.
Chuba Akpom is set to lead the line in that game, although Serge Gnabry and Martin Angha face late fitness tests. Player ratings: Damian Martinez A spectator for much of the game on his return, he could do little about the goal. Ignasi Miquel Had led the line well until his costly misjudgement late on. Benik Afobe was un-used as Bolton drew with Barnsley in the Championship, whilst, in League One, Chuks Aneke completed 90 minutes for Crewe, seeing a shot saved as they lost to Shrewsbury, the side against whom he made his professional debut in the Carling Cup last season.
Craig Eastmond was withdrawn in stoppage time as his Colchester side beat Bury The defensive-midfielder saw a shot saved in the opening period and was also booked for a rash challenge, as well as being on the receiving end of several hefty tackles himself. Philip Roberts was an un-used sub as Inverness were thrashed at home to Motherwell. The striker was a lively presence throughout, whilst another Emirates Stadium outcast, Nicklas Bendtner , was a late substitute as Juventus and Lazio drew Neither Wellington nor Samuel Galindo were involved for Ponferradina or Lugo respectively, whilst Denilson and Joel Campbell are likely to feature for their respective loan clubs tonight.
Ryo and Benik Afobe, for example, are two promising talents, but neither player has been able to hold down a regular place in the starting line-up for their loan sides, and this could serve to stunt their respective development. Conor Henderson and Daniel Boateng, meanwhile, have scarcely been used by Coventry and Oxford, and the best option for Arsenal may be to re-call the pair and send them elsewhere before the loan transfer window deadline on November 25th.
In contrast, there are some loans which are working out well for Arsenal youngsters, with Chuks Aneke and Craig Eastmond both flourishing in League One. It is heartening to see Aneke earning rave reviews at Crewe after he struggled during his two loan spells last season, whilst, although his long-term future will in all probability lie away from Arsenal, Eastmond is doing his future career prospects no harm at all at Colchester.
Philip Roberts, for an 18 year old, has settled in well at Inverness. The likes of Ju-Young Park, Nicklas Bendtner and Denilson will probably never play for Arsenal again, whilst it is highly unlikely that Samuel Galindo will ever pull on the famous red-and-white for a competitive fixture.
Wellington remains an interesting talent, as his display last week showed, but it is a little worrying that at this stage he is still unable to command a regular place in the starting line-up of a Spanish second-division side. Bilbao, who will meet the Gunners again at Underhill in the return fixture next month, missed a penalty through Guillermo Fernandez before the same player was sent off shortly afterwards after lashing out at Sead Hajrovic. Arsenal looked to take advantage, coming particularly close to doing so through Serge Gnabry, but must now beat Bilbao at home and hope that other results go their way if they are to make it through.
The result means that Arsenal are still without a win or a goal in the competition since their opening-day annihilation of Marseille at Barnet. The game began at electrifying speed and, just seconds after kick-off, Reice Charles-Cook had to be alert to palm away an effort from Inaki Williams.
Guillermo Fernandez then headed over in what was the first of a series of significant incidents involving the young Bilbao striker.
The year-old was then brought down in the area but saw his subsequent penalty saved by Charles-Cook, before, perhaps with frustration boiling over following his spot-kick miss, he was shown a red card for a suspected elbow on Hajrovic.
Arsenal looked to make their numerical advantage count immediately, but Hector Bellerin shot wide following a diligent foray down the right-flank, before the half concluded with Aqueche slashing a shot horribly wide from distance.
Given that it is an international week, London Colney is a particularly quiet place. There will be some fresh faces present in the youth set-up, however, with the club having invited two Swedish youngsters for trials at the training ground.
Hoping to follow in the footsteps of Kristoffer Olsson, who was signed following a successful trial stint of his own in and has gone on to become a regular for the club at U21 level, are Jamaal Raage, a striker, and defender Hampus Dahlquist.
Raage previously had a trial with Manchester United, and is currently contracted to Brommapojkarna, whilst Dahlquist is with IFK Goteburg, and will arrive next week having initially been scheduled to be assessed in the summer. Meanwhile, Arsenal U18s are still searching for their first win under new coach Steve Gatting having gone down away to West Ham United at the weekend. Arsenal created several opportunities but also allowed their opponents to get into the game, with a rare mistake from Jon Toral leading to one of the conceded goals.
Anthony Jeffrey impressed again on the left flank, whilst Jack Jebb also came close to finding the net, but the young Gunners will be hoping for a better outcome when they face Norwich City at the weekend. Player ratings: Deyan Iliev Kicking, like many Arsenal goalkeepers, was suspect, but redeemed himself with one good save. U18 Premier League West Bromwich Albion 6 Arsenal 2 Brown, Maitland-Niles Perhaps it was to be expected given the very young nature of the side, but Arsenal U18s coach Steve Gatting will still have been disappointed to have seen his team concede six goals at the hands of their West Bromwich Albion counterparts in the Midlands today.
U21 Premier League Arsenal 1 Olsson West Bromwich Albion 2 Arsenal U21s suffered a defeat to West Bromwich Albion at London Colney this afternoon in their final home fixture of this phase of the competition, despite Swedish midfielder Kristoffer Olsson finding the net again, this time with a superbly-executed free-kick.
